Product Design: What is it?

For a layman, product design simply means the process of moving from 2D to 3D that is transformation of drawings made by a person into real things or objects. Final product could be anything from a dress to a piece of jewellery to an automobile or anything else under the Sun. it all begins in the minds of the designer who starts with a tangible idea and works on it to develop it into a real world thing. It so happens sometimes that the idea may seem brilliant but the final product may not turn out to be a feasible one. Product design is a long process that gives life to an idea making it functional and seeing that the product is also aesthetically appealing for the consumers.

In either case, product design invariable delivers something new for the consumers. Whenever these ideas fructify into products, the products are new and technologically advanced. Product designing today is a complex process that takes help of computer simulation. Computers have today made product designing simpler and very exciting as it translates ideas into new 3D products that can be viewed and judged if they will be feasible if produced. Computer simulation also aids in designing better products.

Product designing today has become a very lucrative career for individuals who have bright ideas and are willing to put their ideas to test. After all, companies can stay in the competition today only if they are able to deliver something new and better every now and then to the consumers. On the one hand companies are engaged in marketing and advertising, on the other they are constantly making efforts to come with something new with the help of product designing which is a part of the larger process called R&D.

Product designing today concerns itself with safety, ecology, environment, economy and ultimately the expectations of the end consumer. These are some considerations that limit the fertile imagination of any product designer but are nevertheless necessary to come up with a product that can be created on a mass scale and brings profits to the company.

All companies who are successful and have a feel of the pulse of the public remain involved with product designing, whether they do it on their own or hire the services of a professional designer. It is often said that necessity is the mother of invention. But there is no dearth of creative designers who make product designs that create a niche for them in the market when final products are made out from these designs.

Product designing is a very challenging field of study for those who love brainstorming as this is one field where creativity and imagination are considered to be great virtues. ‘What next’ is an idea that compels designers to come up with innovative products for the consumers.
